Makoto Yabuki is a Japanese artist who has done some brilliant animation and photography combined with computer generated stuff. His “White box” animation really hit us because it looks like it’s straight out of the TV OFF candyland :)

Is your shadow playing tricks on you behind your back?

Two recent art project we have come across have one thing in common: they play with shadows.

Ever played with hand shadows? The British artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster sure have. And now they are doing it with piles of rubbish, just take a look:

That’s a picture of a piece called “White Trash (With Gulls)”, one of their earliest shadow work. That’s really the shadow of that pile of rubbish projected on the wall. There’s more to be seen at Environmental Graffiti blog. Btw, that’s six months of household waste – this artist couple has a few things to say about the way we live.

On a lighter note, Katie Sokoler has real fun with shadows. She taped paper shadow people onto street walls in Brooklyn and photographed people walking by at the exact moment they matched their shadows. Her photos are really funny and positive:

Post-it stop motion animation

I did a blog post about Post-it note art earlier this year, now I’m going for it again – and this time the sticky little pieces of paper are moving!

Imagine the amount of work done for that.

Here’s a fun short movie called Synesthesia by Terri Timely (a film making duo formed by Ian Kibbey and Corey Creasey). It’s pretty brilliant and even has cats in it.

250.000 eurocent street art – stolen

Experimentadesign’s Urban Design event in Amsterdam featured a pretty amazing piece of street art, created by Sagmeister Inc. “Obsessions Make My Life Worse And My Work Better” written on the street using 250.000 eurocent coins.

Eight days and 250.000 coins later the coins got stolen, or to be exact cleaned up by the authorities. The process got documented on Sagmeister’s website and there’s a Flickr group with a lot of photos from the event.

Ok, so these buildings are having a fun night out

Someone just taught the Mint Plaza buildings in San Francisco how to cha-cha-cha. This is not CGI animation, it’s in real life and in huge size also, done with a pile of video projectors and lots of wits. It’s pretty amazing – the falling golf(?) balls are my favorite.

Subway art gallery opening

The New York based group Improv Everywhere created an art gallery opening on a Manhattan subway platform. The video of the “gallery opening” is hilarious and their idea of converting objects found at the platform, including advertisements, into pieces of art is actually very interesting.

The placards they made to describe the “works of art” can be read at Chad Nicholson’s Flickr photos.

Kutiman takes sampling to another level

Probably the most amazing piece of sample based music since DJ Shadow’s Endtroducing, this guy called Kutiman just released his Thru You project on the Internet a week ago. I’m excited, it’s something new, really creative and bound to create a whole new thing – just like Endtroducing, I wonder how many kids bought a sampler just because of DJ Shadow (I know I did).

Kutiman created seven video/song remixes from bits and pieces of videos found on YouTube, glued them together and actually made quite impressive music out of those “this is me playing guitar” home videos.

It’s fun to check out the source material, the info description on Kutiman’s video links every original video which he sampled.
